Descriptionof Tierra Verde’s grounds

Tierra Verde” holistic center is located on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast, in the village of Mazunte, municipality of Santa Maria Tonameca, District of San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca’s state. Tierra Verde’s  south-east border, adjoins the Punta Cometa Reserve, from which it is separated by a pre-Hispanic wall. Punta Cometa is the southern most point of Mexico and was a ceremonial site in pre-Hispanic times. To the west, the center faces Mermejita beach. Tierra Verde’s grounds cover an area of 2.882 sq. m. of gently sloping land with an abundance of beautiful trees and vegetation.

Buildings

The center’s several buildings include: a kitchen/dining room, accommodation, storeroom, a Central Palapa and 4 cabins ( of which three lack only the roof and loft, while the fourth has only the foundations  and base laid. The mud bricks and timber necessary for their completion are safely stored in the center’s grounds.) Tierra Verde has a 30.000 liter capacity water storage tank. The water is pumped directly from the village’s well 3 days a week.

The building system

The buildings have stone and concrete foundations and frames. The walls are mud brick made, a material which is both weather resistant and thermal. The bricks have been finished with a sealer to  maximize their resistance to humidity and insects.  There are lofts of colored concrete above the Catalan (arched) roofs of the rooms, The other roofs are of woven palm fronds with treated pine beams and supports. The timber was felled in accordance with forestry regulations.  As  can be seen, the center has been built with materials from the region.  All the buildings are removed from the boundaries of the ground and well spaced, to allow for the circulation of breezes and the natural flow off of rain water. The toilets are of the dry, ecological composting  type, that  neither pollute nor waste water while producing high quality, natural fertilizer.  The soapy waste water from the bathrooms and kitchen is recycled. First, the grease is filtered out and it then passes through a gravel and sand filter for cleaning before being be used to water the gardens. The entire process is carried out within the center’s grounds  meaning there is no waste water run-off to neighboring land or on tothe road.
